The $49 bait-and-switch
It's a well-known trap. An ad offers your whole house for $49 or $99. Once the crew is inside, they "find" mold or a problem, and the bill jumps to hundreds or thousands.
- A Las Vegas HVAC company calls $49 to $99 whole-house deals unrealistic and puts a legit job at $450 to $1,000 for an average home.
- KTNV reported Las Vegas ads like "$5 a vent, we'll clean your whole house for $75," followed by sudden claims of mold in the vents.
- The Better Business Bureau has warned about $49.95 to $89.95 specials followed by bogus mold tests and pressure to pay much more.
- NADCA, the duct cleaning trade group, warns about "blow-and-go" companies that charge a nominal fee and do a poor job.
Protect yourself: get a written price before anyone starts, get at least three estimates (the EPA's advice), and be wary of anyone who says they're "EPA certified." The EPA says to watch for that claim. If someone says you have mold, ask to see it and get a second opinion.
Do you actually need it?
Probably not on a schedule. The EPA says it doesn't recommend routine duct cleaning, only as needed, and that duct cleaning has never been shown to prevent health problems. It suggests cleaning when:
- there's substantial visible mold inside hard (sheet metal) ducts,
- ducts are infested with insects or rodents, or
- ducts are clogged with excessive dust and debris.
ENERGY STAR says to inspect, clean or change your filter monthly. If you do hire someone, the EPA says they should follow NADCA's standards.

Local listings don't define what's included, and HomeBlue prices by vent ($33 to $44 each in Las Vegas, often with a 10-vent minimum). Ask how many vents and returns are included and whether the main trunk lines and the air handler get cleaned.

NV Energy's 2026 home improvement rebate sheet lists, one per home:
- $100 for Tier 1 duct sealing, with before and after photos.
