Does a heat pump make sense in Las Vegas?
A heat pump is an AC that can also run in reverse to heat your home. Here's the case for and against it in Vegas:
- Mild winters help. The U.S. Department of Energy says heat pumps work in nearly all of the country except places with long stretches below freezing. Las Vegas averages about 10 freezing nights a year.
- Heating can cost less than gas. SWEEP, a Southwest energy nonprofit, estimated in 2022 that heat pumps cut Las Vegas heating costs about 30% compared with gas, saving more than $100 a year. That used 2022 gas and power rates.
- Cooling matters more. DOE says that in warmer climates, cooling efficiency (SEER2) matters more than heating efficiency (HSPF2). In Vegas, you're mostly buying a good AC.
- They wear out a bit sooner. A Las Vegas HVAC company puts heat pumps at 10 to 14 years here, against 10 to 15 for a cooling-only AC, because a heat pump runs all year.
- Dual fuel is the middle ground. A Las Vegas HVAC company describes heat pumps paired with a gas furnace, where the furnace takes over on the coldest nights.
About 37% of City of Las Vegas homes heated with electricity in the 2010 to 2014 census survey, and most of the rest used gas. If your home already has gas, compare a quote for AC plus furnace with a heat pump. Furnace prices

Efficiency rules in Nevada
Nevada is in DOE's Southwest region. Since 2023, a new split-system heat pump must be at least 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2, and a packaged (rooftop) heat pump at least 13.4 SEER2 and 6.7 HSPF2. ENERGY STAR heat pumps are 15.2 SEER2 and 7.8 HSPF2 or better. More in AC size, SEER2 and refrigerants.
Rebates and tax credits for 2026
- Federal tax credit: gone. The 25C credit, up to $2,000 for a heat pump, ended for anything installed after December 31, 2025. Some pages, including an older ENERGY STAR fact sheet, still say it runs to 2032. That's out of date.
- NV Energy: its 2026 rebate sheet lists no heat pump rebates. Some third-party sites and contractors still list NV Energy heat pump rebates of a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Ask for the official program page before you count on one.
- Southwest Gas: no heat pump or dual fuel rebate on its 2026 Nevada form.
- Nevada HOMES and HEAR: the state still lists the launch as "TBD." When it starts, it may include heat pump rebates.

Common questions
How much does a heat pump cost in Las Vegas?

Is a heat pump worth it in Las Vegas?
Often, for heating. A Southwest energy nonprofit estimated in 2022 that heat pumps cut Las Vegas heating costs about 30% compared with gas, saving more than $100 a year. Winters here are mild, and the U.S. Department of Energy says heat pumps work in nearly all of the country except places with long stretches below freezing.
How long does a heat pump last in Las Vegas?
A Las Vegas HVAC company puts heat pumps at 10 to 14 years here, a little shorter than a cooling-only AC, because they run in both summer and winter.
What efficiency does a new heat pump need in Nevada?
Since 2023, a new split heat pump must be at least 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2. Packaged (rooftop) heat pumps need 13.4 SEER2 and 6.7 HSPF2. ENERGY STAR models are 15.2 SEER2 and 7.8 HSPF2 or better.
Is there a heat pump rebate in Las Vegas?
We couldn't confirm one for 2026. The federal 25C credit ended for anything installed after December 31, 2025. NV Energy's 2026 rebate sheet lists no heat pump rebates, Southwest Gas offers none, and Nevada's HOMES and HEAR rebates haven't launched.
