Will a Powerwall run my AC?
Last checked October 29, 2026
Short answer
One Tesla Powerwall 3 is rated to start an AC whose locked rotor amps (LRA) are 185 or less. Find the LRA on your outdoor unit's label, enter it below, and see whether one Powerwall covers it, you need more, or the AC should stay off backup.
Enter the LRA number to check.
Where to find the LRA
- Go to the outdoor unit (or the rooftop package unit).
- Find the metal or sticker data plate, usually on the side.
- Look for LRA near the compressor info. It's a number in amps.
- Snap a photo of the label and send it to any installer you're getting quotes from.
How the check works
Tesla sizes AC backup by LRA, the surge your compressor pulls for a split second when it starts. One Powerwall 3 is rated for up to 185 amps LRA. Tesla's own example: a 200 amp LRA unit needs two Powerwalls. If the LRA is too high, Tesla lists three fixes: let the system shed the AC when off-grid, add Powerwalls, or leave the AC off the backup circuit.
Starting the AC is the hard part. Running it for hours also depends on how big the battery bank is (13.5 kWh per Powerwall 3) and whether solar is recharging it. Heat matters too: Tesla says the Powerwall 3 derates its power above 104°F.
A first check based on Tesla's published ratings, not an installer's design. Ask for the LRA sizing in writing.
Common questions
Can one Tesla Powerwall 3 run central AC?
It can start an AC whose locked rotor amps (LRA) are 185 or less, according to Tesla's datasheet. Above that you need more Powerwalls, or the AC stays off the backup circuit.
Where do I find my AC's LRA?
On the data label on the outdoor unit (or the rooftop package unit). Look for "LRA" next to the compressor. It's the surge in amps the compressor pulls when it starts.
Does heat affect a Powerwall?
Tesla's datasheet says the Powerwall 3 runs from -4°F to 122°F and derates its power above 104°F. In a Las Vegas garage or on a sunny wall, ask the installer where it'll be mounted.
