Your AC died in a Vegas summer: the first 24 hours

Last checked October 29, 2026

Check the thermostat, breaker and filter first, since those fix a surprising number of 'dead' ACs for free. If it's still out, get people and pets somewhere cool, and expect a diagnostic visit to run about $75 to $180 in published Las Vegas ranges. Renters: AC counts as an essential service in Nevada when the landlord supplies it, and after written notice the landlord has 48 hours, not counting weekends or holidays.

Check these before you call anyone

  1. Thermostat: set to cool, set below room temperature, fresh batteries if it has them.
  2. Breaker: look for a tripped breaker for the AC or air handler. Reset it once. If it trips again, stop and call.
  3. Filter: a clogged filter can choke airflow and freeze the coil. DOE suggests changing it every month or two in cooling season, more often with dust and pets.
  4. Outdoor unit: is the fan spinning? Is anything blocking it? DOE suggests at least 2 feet of clearance.
  5. Ice on the lines: if the refrigerant lines or coil are iced over, turn cooling off and run just the fan to thaw it before a tech arrives.

Keep everyone safe

Vegas heat is no joke: July 2024 averaged 99.9°F, the hottest month on record here. Kids, older family members and pets get hit first.

  • Close blinds on the sunny side and keep doors closed
  • Go somewhere cool during the hottest hours. Clark County opens daytime cooling stations during extreme heat
  • Water, cool showers, and watch for heat illness signs

When you call for service

  • Diagnostic fee: about $75 to $180 in published Las Vegas ranges. Ask what it is and whether it comes off the repair.
  • After-hours and weekends cost more. If everyone's safe, a weekday visit can save money.
  • Most common summer fix: capacitors and contactors, about $90 to $400.
  • Get the broken part named before you approve anything, and if they say replace the whole system, get a second opinion. See repair or replace.

If you rent

Nevada law has real teeth here, but only if you follow the steps.

  • It's the landlord's job to keep air conditioning in good repair when they supply it (NRS 118A.290).
  • AC is an "essential service" under NRS 118A.380 when the landlord is required to supply it.
  • Give written notice. The Southern Nevada Health District suggests certified mail with return receipt and has sample letters. Text the landlord too, but the written notice is what starts the clock.
  • 48 hours to fix it or make best efforts, not counting Saturdays, Sundays or legal holidays.
  • No repair fees for you. Since July 2023, landlords can't charge tenants for repairs that are the landlord's duty, including home-warranty deductibles, unless you or your guests caused the problem.
  • If they don't fix it, the law lists options like buying reasonable substitutes and deducting the cost, recovering damages, or getting comparable housing. Each has conditions, and you generally need to be current on rent.
  • Don't just stop paying. Nevada Legal Services warns that for habitability problems the rent may need to go into escrow with the court.
